Jimmy Keene is an American author, businessman, and former drug dealer who is best known for his role as an informant in a high-profile murder investigation.
Early Life and Criminal Activity: Keene grew up in Kankakee, Illinois, and became involved in the drug trade, eventually becoming a successful dealer. He was eventually arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Undercover Operation: While incarcerated, Keene was approached by federal prosecutors with a dangerous proposition: go undercover in a maximum-security prison to befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall. The goal was to elicit a confession from Hall regarding the murder of Jessica Roach and potentially other unsolved cases. In exchange for his cooperation and a successful outcome, Keene would be released from prison.
Success and Release: Keene successfully befriended Hall and obtained incriminating information about Jessica Roach, although he was unable to get a full confession. However, the evidence helped strengthen the case against Hall and Keene was ultimately released from prison after serving a significantly reduced sentence.
Author and Speaker: After his release, Keene co-authored the book "In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption" which details his experiences undercover. He has also worked as a public speaker and consultant on law enforcement matters.
Media Adaptations: Keene's story has been adapted into the Apple TV+ miniseries "Black Bird", where he is portrayed by Taron Egerton.
